It’s been two weeks since we announced the launch of Farmcrowdy Group and our team has been hard at work to follow up on our promise to keep building agritech solutions for the achievement of food security.

One of the subsidiaries of the Farmcrowdy Group is Farmcrowdy, which gives everyone an opportunity to empower rural farmers by sponsoring any farm type while earning a Return on their Sponsorship.

We, however, recognize the huge gap that has existed for the longest time now in the agricultural value chain as a result of an unstructured marketplace where prices are not regulated, and difficulties are experienced because product specifications cannot be met.

The need to overcome this challenge led us to embark on a major project doing market research, meeting with farmers from several regions in the country, setting up a secure platform and finally putting together a team that will drive this solution.

It is with excitement that we present to you, Farmgate Africa, a new subsidiary for the Farmcrowdy Group that has been in the works for several months but is officially launching today, 2nd of April, 2019.

Farmgate Africa is a company focused on providing major processors and international buyers the opportunity to purchase commodities directly from local farming clusters. The platform seeks to bring farmers closer to processors and off-takers by eliminating the layers of intermediaries.

Operating with the core values of the Farmcrowdy Group, Farmgate Africa is the solution to the problems facing market access such as ineffective communication, duplicate products, unregulated prices, poor after-sales service and more.

Farmgate Africa focuses on:

  • Identifying major processors and international buyers for certain commodities.
  • Identifying the production clusters and building relationships with local farmers in those areas.
  • Getting major processors to place orders via the platform.
  • Aggregating the commodities from smallholder farmers while paying attention to the unique specifications of the buyers.
  • Delivery of commodities to major processors or the international buyer’s agent.
  • After sales support

The model for the business is simple, “Get the farmers closer to the processors by reducing the layers of intermediaries.” In order to achieve this, the platform takes two approaches for the commodity traders and commodity purchasers.

For commodity traders, the process is simple:

  • Sponsor selects from an available range of agricultural commodities to trade.
  • Sponsor specifies desired trade volume and an assigned account manager gets in touch to close the deal.
  • Sponsor gets back capital and yield at the end of the investment period.

For commodity purchasers, the process is equally as easy:

  • Buyers select from an available range of agricultural commodities to purchase.
  • Buyer specifies desired trade volume and an assigned account manager contacts user.
  • The order is processed and shipped to the buyer’s specified delivery address.

In the space of two months, Farmgate Africa has traded with reputable multinationals and international buyers. The commodities traded include sorghum, maize, soyabeans, and beef.

Farmgate Africa is also scheduled to trade in sesame, soyabeans, and ginger with the UAE.

The Farmgate Africa team is led by Managing Director, Kenneth Obiajulu, a First-Class Graduate of Economics and Business Studies (Market Specialization) from Redeemer’s University, Postgraduate Diploma Holder from the Institute of Marketing of Nigeria, and an Associate Member of the same institute. Kenneth is also a Ph.D. scholarship recipient from the Delta State Government.
